The Garden Arrest

Topic: New Testament Scripture: Matthew 26:31–26:75

The word Gethsemane is a combination of two Hebrew words which mean "oil press". But it wasn't the olives that were under pressure the night before Jesus' death. The anguish and suffering that Jesus felt as He knelt in prayer before His Father was very real. He knew what was coming, and He knew how bad it would be. The physical suffering would be one thing, but the emotional suffering of being deserted by His disciples and then forsaken by His Father was almost more than He could bare. So it's worth remembering that He did this for us. 'By His stripes we are healed,' said Isaiah, and he was right!
