Our story is not very long. We commenced holding pubic worship services in the first half of 2012, so our history is short. However, while we are a relatively new church, the concept of the type of church that we hope Disciples will grow to become, has been brewing in our leadership team for some time.
Springfield has been on the radar of our Lead Pastor, Greg Gardiner, for many years. For him, it was easy to en-vision what greater Springfield would become, and the people that would eventually come to live here. It is a new area, and so it needs new churches.
In 2010, Greg and Fiona Gardiner applied to be assessed as church planters by the Acts 29 Church Planting Network, with a view to planting a new church in Springfield. Acts 29 approved them to proceed, and so they began the task of putting together a team that would launch this new work.
The Launch Team started to gather in Greg & Fiona’s Living Room at the end of November 2010. In December, Disciples Church Springfield became an incorporated entity, ready to begin the task of gathering a Core Group of people to start the church.
In March 2011, the process of gathering the Core Group started, and weekly gatherings were held in the World Knowledge Centre at Education City in Springfield Central. Gathering the Core Group took just over a year.
The next step was to launch public services and begin to establish the various ministries of Disciples Church. This happened on Sunday, May 13, 2012 and has been ongoing ever since.
In October 2013, another milestone was reached when the church purchased the former Mitre 10 hardware store building at Spring Lake Village. The Ipswich City Council approved an application for the building to be used as a Place of Worship and services commenced there on Sunday December 1, 2013.
Our story is relatively short. A lot of the work is still ahead of us. If you’d like to be part of the continuing story, please don’t hesitate to make contact.
